Descaling Didn't Fix It — What Next

Descaling only reaches the water path. If the machine is still slow or weak afterwards, the fault was never scale — here is what it usually turns out to be.

Then the fault was not scale. Descaling reaches the water path and nothing else, so if the machine is still weak, slow or silent after a cycle, the problem is somewhere the solution never went.

That is not a wasted cycle. It is a useful result, because it rules out the most common cause and leaves a short list of things it can actually be.

What descaling reaches, and what it doesn’t

The solution follows the water. Tank, pump, thermoblock or boiler, valves, and out through the group. Anything on that path with mineral deposit on it gets attacked and, if the deposit is thin enough, dissolved.

What is not on that path is most of the machine. The brew unit seals are mechanical parts in the coffee path, not the water path. Grinder burrs never see water. The drainage tract carries spent grounds and sits downstream of everything. The flow meter is on the water side but its impeller is a moving part, and a descale that frees deposit upstream can jam it rather than clean it.

So the honest split is this. Heating surfaces and pipework, yes. Anything mechanical, anything in the coffee path, anything that grinds or drains, no.

The five things it usually is instead

Brew unit seals. On a super-automatic this is the most common cause of weak or short volume that survives a descale. The seals harden with heat and age and the unit stops building pressure against the puck. Published range on the brand we see most: $280-$520.

A silted drainage tract. Spent grounds compact in the path behind the brew unit until resistance rises enough to stall the cycle. Nothing about a descale touches it. It is cleaning work, not repair, and it usually rides along with a service.

Grinder burrs. If the coffee is weak rather than slow, and the machine is past year six, the grind has probably drifted coarse as the burrs rounded off. Range on the same platform: $220-$380.

The pump. A pump losing pressure produces exactly the symptom people read as scale, which is why it so often survives a descaling cycle unchanged. $240-$340.

Loosened deposit that moved. This is the case where the machine is worse afterwards rather than the same. It happens on first descales of long-neglected machines, and the deposit lodges in a flow meter, a valve seat or the brew unit inlet.

The stuck descale cycle

A distinct case, and worth naming because it frightens people. The cycle starts, gets part way, and stops, or it will not start at all and the machine sits demanding a descale it refuses to run.

That is the machine telling you the flow path is already too restricted to complete the cycle, or that a sensor in that path is not seeing the flow it expects. Running the cycle again does not help and occasionally makes it worse.

This one is a bench job. The machine needs opening at the restricted point rather than more solution pushed at it.

Representative job · composite of recent work. A Venice customer had run three descaling cycles back to back on a seven-year-old super-automatic that was pouring short and slow, and by the third one it had stopped completing the cycle at all. On the bench the cylinder was scaled hard enough to resist by hand, the brew unit seals were flat, and a flake of loosened deposit had settled in the flow meter. The descaling had been the right instinct and the wrong tool: two of those three faults were mechanical, and the third was caused by the descaling itself. Seals, meter cleaned, cylinder descaled properly on the bench, back in service. The address went onto filtration afterwards, because on that water it was always going to return.

Why Los Angeles makes this worse

Measured hardness in this county spans roughly 60 to 180 ppm, address by address. At the hard end a machine wants descaling annually. At the soft end it can go two or three years. Almost nobody knows which end they are on, so the interval gets guessed, and guessing low is how machines arrive with deposit thick enough to break loose in sheets.

The coastal and Westside addresses generally run harder. Central LA and Pasadena sit mid-range. The west valleys run softer. The variation across a few miles is larger than the variation between many American cities, which is why a national maintenance interval printed in a manual is a poor guide here.

Filtration ends the argument. A cartridge on a schedule moves any address to the long interval and stops the deposit forming rather than dissolving it later.

Doing it properly is not the same operation

There is a real difference between running a cycle and descaling a machine, and it is the reason a bench descale sometimes succeeds where three kitchen cycles failed.

A cycle pushes solution through the path at whatever concentration the machine dilutes it to, for whatever contact time the firmware allows, in one direction. That is enough for a machine that has been descaled on schedule and has a light film. It is not enough for a machine with years of deposit, because the solution exhausts against the surface long before it reaches the bottom of the layer.

On the bench the components that hold the worst of it come out and get soaked at a known concentration for as long as they need, and the narrow parts get checked afterwards rather than assumed clean. The flow path gets verified under pressure at the end, which is how you find the flake that moved instead of discovering it a week later.

None of that is exotic. It is the difference between treating the water path and treating the deposit.

What to use, and what to keep away from the machine

Citric acid or a purpose-made descaler at the concentration the maker specifies. That is the whole list.

The two failure modes worth naming are strength and contact time. Too weak and you get a cycle that achieves nothing and convinces the owner the fault is mechanical. Too strong, or left sitting for hours in a machine that was not designed for it, and you start attacking the metals and the seals rather than the scale.

Vinegar sits in the second category despite being the internet’s favourite answer. It is weak, so it needs a long dwell, and a long dwell is exactly what the aluminum and brass in these machines does not want. It also leaves a taste that takes an unreasonable amount of flushing to clear. It is not a money-saving version of the right product, it is a different and worse one.

What it costs to find out

$145 diagnostic — includes pickup from your address and return delivery. $60 is credited toward the repair when you approve an estimate of $200 or more. The written estimate lands before anybody spends your money, which §2722 requires, together with the bar on charging anything in excess of it without your prior consent.

Q-01 Can descaling damage a machine?
The correct solution at the correct strength will not. What does damage machines is descaling a badly scaled machine for the first time after years, because the deposit breaks loose in sheets and lodges somewhere narrower. That is a bench job, not a kitchen one.
Q-02 How often should I descale in Los Angeles?
Annually on the harder end of the county and every two to three years on the softer end, and the difference between those addresses can be a few miles. Filtration moves any address to the long end of that range.
Q-03 Can I use vinegar?
No. Vinegar is a weak acid that works slowly, which means long contact time with aluminum, brass and seals that were not designed for it, and it leaves a taste that takes many litres to flush. Citric or a purpose-made solution does the job faster and does not attack the machine.
Q-04 Why is my machine slower after descaling than before?
Because loosened deposit has moved. It came off a wall somewhere wide and settled somewhere narrow, usually a flow meter, a valve seat or the brew unit inlet. It is a common outcome on a first descale and it needs the machine opened.
Q-05 Does the descaling cycle clean the milk system?
No, they are separate circuits and separate cycles. Descaling addresses the water path. Milk residue is cleaned with a different product on a different schedule, and a neglected milk system is its own fault entirely.
