The Jura premium is for the espresso quality and the design — both real, but we will say so honestly when the customer’s actual need is volume not espresso.

Jura’s sealed brew unit is rebuildable but not user-serviceable. Skipped maintenance accelerates failure: piston seals, drive gear wear, and pre-brew pressure loss are typical 4-7 year failures depending on cup count. We strip, clean, regrease, replace seals and drive components.
Jura milk lines clog from milk-protein scaling without daily rinse. Symptom: weak foam, foam quality drop, eventually no foam. Daily rinse cycle is built in but operators skip it. Deep clean is a 60-90 minute service.
Single-thermoblock models (Z10, ENA, E-series) wear faster than dual-thermoblock (X10, GIGA). Element fails at 5-7 years on single, 8-10 on dual under hard-water LA without descaling. Annual descale prevents.
Ceramic burrs on most Jura models last 6-8 years under home use, 3-5 years under office use. P.R.G. continuously variable grinder on Z10 has its own service paradigm — motorized adjustment can drift, recalibration is a 30-minute job.
Standard 6-8 year wear item under home use, 4-5 years under office use. Vibratory pump on entry / mid models; ULKA branded. Stocked replacement, 45-minute job.
Z10, X10, and GIGA 10 use sophisticated control electronics. Most "screen frozen" calls are firmware-driven and clear with a power cycle. Persistent unresponsive screens are board-level repair — part dispatch through Jura USA in NJ takes 3-7 days.
E6, E8, ENA 8, S8 and J9 sit in the compact tier.Z6, Z8, Z10, GIGA and the X-series office machines sit in the premium tier.

5-year-old Jura GIGA 6 at a Century City law firm executive break room (~30 cups/day). Owner reported "machine completely dead — won’t even boot." Diagnosed: thermal fuse tripped from blocked drainage causing internal water build-up; secondary cause was 4 years of skipped descaling that had reduced heating-element efficiency below thermal-fuse threshold. Cleared the drainage, descaled the boiler, replaced the thermal fuse. Rebuilt the brew unit while we were in there (preventive). Total: 3.5 hours, $620 parts and labor. The "dead" machine was a perfectly good machine that had been ignored for 4 years.
The biggest reason 5-7 year old Juras "die" is skipped descaling and milk-system maintenance, not actual failure. We have rescued more Juras from operators who thought their machine was done than from machines that were genuinely past saving. If your Jura is throwing errors and an LA shop quoted you a "machine’s done" replacement at $3-5K, get a second opinion before you write the check.
A brew unit error is a sensor reporting the module is out of tolerance, not a dead machine. What causes it, what a rebuild involves, and when it is the end.
Descaling only reaches the water path. If the machine is still slow or weak afterwards, the fault was never scale — here is what it usually turns out to be.
